Do you like herbs? We like to add herbs to our favorite dishes. Finding fresh herbs is sometimes hard which is why we decided to grow them home. If you don’t have a garden, water-grown herbs can do the tricks.

Herbs grow really well in water. You can start them in water, and all you need is some nice clippings.

Cilantro, mustard, and dill are grown from seeds and these may give you a problem. In this case, you will have to plant the seeds in the soil, and transfer them into water.

Grow herbs in water

Water

Use glass containers and plain water. Avoid chlorinated water. Leave your regular tap water to air overnight or store rainwater. For optimal results, use spring or well water. It’s packed with minerals.

Container

Mason jars and plastic bottles are a good option. Roots grow well away from light. For this purpose, use amber-colored bottles or just wrap the paper around the bottom of the bottle.

The darkness will prevent the growth of algae. Algae don’t affect the plant, but they sure make your containers look dirty.

Narrow-mouthed jars or bottles offer an advantage as they support the clippings. You don’t need containers with a too narrow mouth as the roots need air. If you use wide-mouthed containers use nylon or wire netting to support the clippings. Netting will also keep mosquitoes away.

Plant cuttings

Clippings root quickly and you don’t need rooting hormones. Clip 6-inch sections from growing tips. Remove lower leaves and remove the lower tips close to the notes from where the roots appear. Make sure no leaves touch the water.

Rosemary and other woody cuttings need more time to root. Change the water once a week. If you can find willow trees, steep some of its branches in warm water overnight.

This is your natural rooting hormone mix. Plant the clippings in the liquid to boost the rooting process. Some like to use rooting hormone powder.

10 best herbs to grow in water

1. Peppermint

Menthol gives peppermint its great benefits. The volatile substance gives this herb its cooling sensation. Put fresh cuttings in a container of your choice to grow new plants.

2. Spearmint

It’s a close relative to peppermint. Spearmint is a natural hybrid of spearmint and water mint.

3. Oregano

Oregano makes your food even more delicious. Use fresh clippings, and use the tips once the plant grows well.

4. Basil

Basil likes warm and light rooms. Clip off the tips before the herb starts flowering.

5. Sage

Take soft cuttings in spring. Sage has strong flavor, and you need 1-2 sage plants. This herb likes light and well-aerated rooms. It’s prone to mildew.

6. Stevia

Use clippings from soft branches, and give them warmth and light.

7. Lemon balm

Lemon balm makes the best tea. Use clippings in spring or fall. The herb likes the warm places and indirect light. You will notice the first roots in 3-4 weeks. Change the water regularly. Lemon balm is prone to a white mildew, so you may want to root the clippings outside.

8. Tarragon

Take the clippings from new growths in spring. Fall clippings take more time to root. Give herb warmth and light.

Russian tarragon is mild and it is added as a green in salads. French tarragon is the best option for your dishes.

9. Thyme

Use green cuttings from new growths, preferably in mid-spring or early summer. Avoid flowering plants. Thyme dries really fast, so put the clippings in the water right after cutting them. Spray the clippings with water. Trim the branches to boost branching.

10. Rosemary

Spring cuttings root faster. Rosemary likes sunny spots.

9 best houseplants to grow in water

Overwatering houseplants is the worst problem for pretty much everyone who lives in an apartment. That’s why you should grow these plants in water.

1. Pothos

Submerge 2-3 nodes of the clippings in water.

2. Arrowhead

Use the same method you use to grow pothos.

3. Philodendrons

Every type grows well in water. You need 6-8 inch tips. Use a rock to secure the cutting in the jar.

4. Peace lily

Use an entire plant or sections of the plant. Remove the soil before you put the cuttings in water.

5. Aluminum plant

Its cuttings grow really well in water.

6. Dracaena

Some people can’t make a difference between this plant and the Chinese lucky bamboo. It’s a variety of dracaena (Dracaena braunii). You can use corn plant (D. fragrans), Song of Indian (D. reflexa). It’s a heavy plant, and you may need to provide support.

7. Dieffenbachia (Dumb cane)

Cut tops and put it in water after the cut end is dry. Be careful, its sap is caustic and may burn your skin.

8. Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema)

Use clean sections, and grow then in large containers filled with water.

9. Chlorophytum (Spider plant, Airplane plant)

Use a goldfish bowl for this plant. You need large plantlets or entire plants. Hanging plants grow really well in water, and you won’t have t worry about the watering part.

6 top vegetables to grow in water

You can plant watercress, water chestnut, wasabi, or lotus. Terrestrial veggies can be grown in water. Leafy greens are perfect.

1. Lettuce

Start the seeds in netted cups, and transfer the seedlings in beds.

2. Spinach

It’s grown in the same way as spinach.

3. Tomatoes

Start the seeds in individual cups, and insert them in the growing medium.

4. Peppers

They have similar requirements for tomatoes.

5. Cucumbers

Bush type cucumbers are best for hydroponics. Climbing types need support.

6. Celery

In this way, you won’t get a plant full of dirt. Growing celery in water gives you a clean veggie.

Feed your water-grown plant

Water-grown plants need supplemental nutrition. You need to dilute regular fertilizers in water or formulations designed for these plants.

Fertilizers tend to accumulate at the bottom and cause root burn. Change the water regularly and flush the plant when needed.

We are at an increased risk of various allergies and illnesses due to air pollution in our homes. The most common contaminants of our homes include carpets, pain, foam insulation materials, glues and adhesives, household cleaners, and pressed-wood products.

According to  Eartheasy:

“The indoor pollutants that affect health are formaldehyde, Volatile Organic Compounds (benzene and trichloroethylene or TCE), airborne biological pollutants, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, pesticides and disinfectants (phenols), and radon.

These pollutants contribute to ‘sick building syndrome’, which causes symptoms ranging from allergies, headaches, and fatigue through to nervous-system disorders, cancer, and death.

Through studies conducted by NASA, scientists have identified 50 houseplants that remove many of the pollutants and gases mentioned above. NASA, with assistance from the Associated Landscape Contractors of America, conducted a two-year study directed by Dr. B.C. Wolverton, an environmental engineer from Picayune, Washington, and a research scientist for NASA for over 20 years.

Dr. Wolverton’s study of the interaction between plants and air found that houseplants, when placed in sealed chambers in the presence of specific chemicals, removed those chemicals from the chambers. He concluded that plants can clean pollutants in homes, offices, factories and retail outlets.”

Here are the 10 most effective plants that cleanse the air from pollutants:

1. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

This decorative plant eliminates benzene, alcohols, acetone, and trichloroethylene from the air, but make sure it is out of reach of your children and pets since it is highly toxic.

2. Bamboo Palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii)

The Bamboo Palm is a great air humidifier and cleanses it from benzene and trichloroethylene.

3. Snake Plant (Sansevieria Trifasciata)

This low-maintenance plant releases oxygen while absorbing carbon dioxide, and it is an effective way to eliminate formaldehyde released by your carpets and wooden furniture.

4. English Ivy (Hedera Helix)

English Ivy is a potent air-cleanser against airborne fecal-matter particles, and also absorbs carcinogens from the smoke.

5. Dragon Tree (Dracaena Marginata)

Due to its appealing look and strong cleansing ability, this subtropical plant has strong cleansing properties, and it filters out xylene, the chemical substance released from paints, cigarettes, and car exhausts.

6. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum Comosum)

Place it near the fireplace or in the kitchen to absorb the accumulated carbon monoxide. It needs plenty of natural light and minimal watering.

7. Dracaena (Dracaena deremensis)

It eliminates trichloroethylene from solvents and varnishes. It is easy to grow and needs small amounts of sunlight and water.

8. Boston Fern (Nephrolepis Exalta Bostoniensis)

This plant is a potent air humidifier and a great way to cleanse the air from formaldehyde.

9. Golden Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum)

This is the best way to get rid of formaldehyde and carbon monoxide.

10. Lady Palm (Rhapis Excelsa)

Its thick green leaves effectively eliminate indoor contaminants. Note that it needs plenty of water during spring and summer.

Make sure you have some of these potent air-purifying plants at home and enjoy the clean and pure air and positive energy!

Spanish experts reveal that these foods are the most dangerous for the heart.

According to experts, proper nutrition reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular disease by 70%.

In the first place among the products harmful to the heart is sausage. It contains a record amount of harmful saturated fats that negatively affect the cardiovascular system. There may be an excess of sodium in meat products.

Experts have also included bacon in the list of foods dangerous for the heart. It contains about 58% of the total fat needed by humans, of which more than 20% are saturated.

“Another additional problem with fatty foods is that they are very tasty and therefore it is very difficult for people to limit themselves to a moderate portion,” says nutrition expert Susanna Leon.

In third place in danger are soluble soups. They have too much salt and also refined sugar in the form of starch or maltodextrin.

The list also includes alcohol, cheap cheese for sandwiches, chips, and energy drinks.

An infection with the coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 can not only manifest itself with fever, cough and difficulty breathing but can also cause neurological symptoms. This is the result of a study by Chinese scientists with patients in Wuhan, the epicenter of the pandemic, from which the virus spread worldwide. As the doctors report in the journal “JAMA Neurology”, a good third of the 214 patients they examined showed signs that the virus had damaged the nervous system. The most common symptoms included dizziness and headache, as well as olfactory and taste disorders.

Reports of corona patients losing their sense of smell and taste, at least temporarily, had accumulated in the past few days. These symptoms indicated that the brain was involved, said Bernd Salzberger from the Regensburg University Hospital. “So far, however, there have been very few examinations of the brain of corona patients. We are still in the dark.”

The current study from Wuhan is also based only on the evaluation of the corresponding patient files, laboratory findings and radiological examinations for the 214 study participants with a proven COVID-19 disease. As the team led by neurologist Ling Mao from Huazhong University of Science and Technology reports, 78 (36.4 percent) of them showed neurological manifestations that were more serious the overall COVID 19 disease was.

The most common observers observed dizziness (36 patients, 16.8 percent) and headache (28 patients, 13.1 percent). In addition, there were taste disorders in twelve patients (5.6 percent) and olfactory disorders in eleven patients (5.1 percent). Six patients (2.8 percent) suffered a stroke.

In an independent editorial to the study, neurologists Samuel Pleasure, Ari Green, and Andrew Josephson from the University of California split these manifestations into specific symptoms (loss of smell or taste, muscle weakness, and strokes) and non-specific symptoms (headache, loss of consciousness, dizziness, and seizures) ) on. In the case of non-specific symptoms in particular, it remains unclear whether these are an expression of the disease itself or are part of a systemic inflammatory reaction in patients who were already very ill. Future studies should examine this question.

Entry into the brain via olfactory nerves

“It is important that the authors found that the patients they examined with some of the most common specific symptoms, including odor or taste disorders and muscle disorders, tended to have these symptoms at the beginning of their clinical course,” said the three neurologists. This differs significantly from the neurological manifestations of Sars infections in 2002/2003, which were also triggered by a coronavirus.

In fact, Sars and Mers – also a coronavirus disease – are known to cause damage to the nervous system. For both infections it has been experimentally proven that the virus can enter the brain via the olfactory nerves in the nasal cavity.

In the case of Covid-19, it is now being discussed whether respiratory arrest could also be the result of neurological damage – for example, inflammation of the brain stem, where the control for the cardiovascular system and the respiratory tract is also located. From a neurological point of view, it is important to clarify how many of the serious illnesses are triggered by the involvement of the central nervous system, notes Peter Berlit, general secretary of the German Society for Neurology.

In view of the current Chinese study, physicians Pleasure, Green and Josephson see neurologists in their future “at the forefront of the pandemic”. The authors of the study consider it particularly important that doctors consider a Covid-19 infection in patients with corresponding neurological symptoms “in order to avoid a delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis and to prevent further transmission”.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says up to 214 million Americans could become ill, while 1.7 million could die if the current coronavirus pandemic continues to worsen.

The CDC made the announcement during a closed-door meeting held last month between CDC officials and dozens of health professionals and epidemiologists from around the world, according to the New York Times, which broke the story for the first time.

During the meeting, one of the CDC’s leading epidemiologists presented four scenarios that demonstrated the possible pathways the virus could take, as well as the effects of its spread across the United States.

For the absolute worst-case scenario, the CDC said between 160 million and 214 million people would get sick with COVID-19, the deadly illness caused by the Wuhan coronavirus which, after originating in China, has since spread to other parts of the world.

According to the CDC, in their projection, even if interventions such as drive-thru testing and barring visitors from nursing homes were to be started immediately, as many as three million Americans might still fall ill.

‘We’re being very, very careful to make sure we have scientifically valid modeling that’s drawing properly on the epidemic and what’s known about the virus,’ Ira Longini, one the epidemic experts present during the meeting, said.

“You can’t win. If you overdo it, you panic everybody. If you under-do it, they get complacent. You have to be careful,” she added.

In the four different scenarios, each person who is diagnosed with the coronavirus is assumed to infect two to three people. According to the CDC, the hospitalization rate is either three percent or 12 percent; and either .25 percent or one percent of all infected people will die. (Related: Coronavirus ravages North America: More US states report an upswing in cases; even Canadian PM’s wife tests positive)

For the CDC’s worst-case scenario, as many as 21 million people were hospitalized, and up to 1.7 million people died.

The hospitalization scenario according to experts, can derail the American healthcare system, especially since data provided by the American Hospital Association shows that the United States only has a little more than 924,000 staffed beds in its hospitals, of which fewer than a tenth are for people who are considered to be critically ill.

In addition, the CDC said during their presentation that the infections—which the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared to be a global pandemic—could last months or even over a year. According to the CDC, infections in the United States could be concentrated in shorter periods and staggered across time in different communities.

According to officials, the outbreak’s trajectory, while dependent on decisive action from medical authorities and the government, also depends on the behavior of the general public and how well they follow rules and protocols.

“When people change their behavior, those model parameters are no longer applicable,” Lauren Gardner, an epidemic expert at Johns Hopkins, said in an interview with the New York Times.

“There is a lot of room for improvement if we act appropriately,” she added.

Among the recommended policies and measures that can be taken by authorities and the public to help prevent further coronavirus infections is the implementation of work-from-home schemes for employees, the banning of mass gatherings and the imposition of travel restrictions.

Other official recommendations include the frequent washing of hands, cleaning and disinfecting surroundings, and the self-quarantining of individuals if they get sick.

Lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer in men and women (after prostate cancer in men and breasts in women). Men and women suffer from different types of lung cancer, so be careful about the symptoms and warning signs, as it is very important to look for symptoms specific to your gender.

Lung Cancer in Women

This type of cancer is called adenocarcinoma and extends from the outside of the lungs.

The symptoms are more evident than in other types of lung cancer. The tumor can become large and in many cases can spread throughout the body before it is detected.

Some of the earliest symptoms are:

  • Pain behind the arm and shoulder
  • Shortness of breath during exercise

Once cancer begins to grow, the following symptoms occur:

  • Increased mucus release and discoloration
  • Chest, shoulder and back pain
  • Stubborn cough
  • Cough with a blood separation
  • Cough with sputum or mucus with blood
  • Lack of air

This type of cancer is actually difficult to detect. It spreads to other parts of the body, and this can only be noticed when it reaches the most advanced stages. Signs can be felt on various parts of the body such as bones, liver, lymph nodes and adrenal glands. The following symptoms occur:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss
  • Blood clots
  • Edema of the neck or face
  • Loss of memory
  • Bone fractures that are not caused by accidental injuries
  • Joint or bone pain

Lung Cancer in Men

The squamous cell carcinoma manifested in men is known as non-small cell lung cancer. It develops in the central part of the lungs, near the main airway (bronchus), as a result of which it is difficult to pass through air, and this causes symptoms that are more obviously related to lung cancer than those most commonly observed in women.

Here are some of the symptoms:

  • Multiple lung infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia
  • Chronic cough

Symptoms related to lung cancer in men interfere with the airway more than the condition in women, but according to many studies, men disregard these symptoms because of their smoking habits.

It is very important not to ignore the warning signs, although the symptoms of lung cancer may seem obvious. It is also very important to reduce the risk of lung cancer at all costs, and unfortunately for some addicted smokers, this also includes quitting smoking.
